How to Update the Air Vent Covers in Your Home with Spray Paint
Learn how to update the air vent covers in your home with spray paint. This is a cheap way to update an overlooked item in your home.
Even after cleaning the vent cover, it was still in good condition paint wise the way it was. But, what's the point in updating everything else if you're not going to update something as trivial as the air vent covers? The air vent cover was the only one of the two vent covers I repainted. The air vent cover for the hot water heater area had to be replaced because the other one was a flimsy piece of aluminum that was too beat up to do anything with.
Spray painting the air vent cover was easy enough of a project to do considering the other bathroom projects we are doing. One thing I do have to let you know about this project is I used the same can of spray paint I used on the mirror we had in our bathroom before the remodel.
TIP: It will be easier to spray paint the air vent covers after you have cleaned them and while they are down. The spray paint I used was Krylon Brushed Metallic Satin Nickel. I used this brand because it dries in 10 minutes or less. If it's warm outside it will be less than the time on the can. The color is because that is the color of the faucets, light base, and cover plates.
Materials Needed for Spray Paint the Air Vent Covers
NOTE: The amount of spray paint needed will depend on how many air vents and the size of the air vents you have. One can should cover at least four small air vent covers with two coats easily. You may be able to get more air vent covers painted with this method with one can.

Spray Painting the Air Vent Covers
NOTE: I spray painted my air vent cover on our deck. I sat it on our barbeque grill without covering it with paper since it is in need of an update itself. I will repaint that when I repaint the old retro metal furniture on our deck. I wouldn't suggest doing this unless you have a grill you are throwing away or going to repaint.
TIP: Be sure to spray paint your air cover vents outside so the fumes don't get to you.
Lay out the newspapers or plastic on an even surface. Place the vent covers on the paper either way. Be sure to hold the lever to where the inner vent slats are open. This will keep them from being painted shut.
Once the side you started with is dry, turn it over and paint the other side holding the vent lever open to paint that side and areas on the other side that may have been missed.
NOTE: You can put the second coat on before moving to the other side if you wish to do so. When and if you put on the second coat is up to you.
You can do touch ups where possible when you have hit the vent cover with the major coats of spray paint.
NOTE: There may be drips and runs on the air vents if you aren't careful. If this happens sand down the drips and runs and repaint the areas.
