Replacing a Ford Probe Timing Belt in a 1993-1997 2.0L Engine

Ford recommends changing the timing belt on California cars every 105,000 miles, and for all other states, at 60,000 miles.

STEP 1: Disconnect the negative battery cable and lay it aside, ensuring that it does not touch metal. Raise the front of the Probe with the floor jack, then support it with jack stands. Place the floor jack under the oil pan and raise it enough to touch the bottom of the oil pan, to support the engine.

STEP 2: Remove the right front wheel using the lug wrench. Remove the right inner front fender panel and right engine mount using the appropriate sockets. Remove the ignition leads and the camshaft cover using the appropriate sockets. Loosen the accessory drive belt tensioners by loosening the sliders and pushing the accessory toward the engine. If the tensioner has a pulley, use a socket or wrench to rotate the pulley away from the belt, thus loosening tension on the belt. Lift the belts off the pulleys.

STEP 3: Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt using the pulley holder tool. Remove the crankshaft pulley using the puller tool. Remove the oil level indicator tube bolt, water pump pulley and timing belt covers using the appropriate sockets. Pull the timing belt guide washer off.

STEP 4: Reinstall the crankshaft bolt and washer temporarily. Turn the crankshaft clockwise via the bolt until the timing marks on the crankshaft sprocket are lined up. The crankshaft sprocket has a notch that lines up with the pointer at the 12 o'clock position. Check the camshaft sprocket marks. The "I" on the left camshaft (while you are looking down at the engine) should be at the 3 o'clock position, and lines up with the "E" on the right camshaft sprocket, which needs to be at the 9 o'clock position. If the marks do not line up, turn the crankshaft one more turn, and all three marks will line up.

STEP 5: Install the camshaft sprocket holding tool between the camshaft sprockets. Turn the tensioner pulley clockwise with an Allen wrench, then disconnect the tensioner spring from the pin. Turn the tensioner pulley counterclockwise to relieve the tension on the timing belt. Lift the timing belt off the sprockets and pulleys. Check that the timing marks are still lined up.

STEP 6: Install the timing belt, working in a counterclockwise direction, starting on the crankshaft sprocket. Keeping the timing belt taut, route it up behind the guide pulley, then over the two camshafts. Route it behind the tensioner (it should be a bit looser on the tensioned side).

STEP 7: Turn the tensioner pulley with the Allen wrench. Connect the tensioner spring onto the pin, then remove the Allen wrench from the tensioner. Remove the camshaft holding tool from the camshaft sprockets. Turn the crankshaft clockwise two turns (slowly) until the timing marks line up again. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer. Install the rest of the parts in reverse order of removal. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to 118 foot-pounds of torque.
