Keith Olbermann's replacement? How about suspended Keith Olbermann?

MSNBC talk show personality Keith Olbermann was suspended by his network Friday "indefinitely" for what they consider conflict of interest infractions. Those infractions appear to be political financial contributions...

MSNBC is seen as the liberal answer to the right-wing pandering Fox News. Its slant is liberal, its commentators are liberal, and much of the dialogue on the shows on MSNBC are progressively flavored. Like their diametric opposite, Fox News, only some of their newscasters can be counted on to give the news without bias. Olbermann is a talk show pundit and personality whose show fits well in the liberal leaning format of the network's programming.

But when MSNBC president Phil Griffin made his announcement, he said in a statement, "I became aware of Keith's political contributions late last night. Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay."

The Post reports that NBC News rules prohibit journalistic activities that "may create the appearance of a conflict of interest . . . Such activities may include participation in or contributions to political campaigns."

Although the rules of journalistic integrity are clear, and it appears that Keith Olbermann, by his own admission, violated those rules on Oct. 28 by contributing $2,400 to three different Democratic campaigns, were the acts actually conflicts of interest? If so, with what? The NBC News model of journalistic integrity?

Apparently.

Considering that MSNBC exists as a liberal platform -- and to argue that it is not a liberal entity would be an exercise in delusionary denial -- and that Olbermann is a liberal pundit, there would seem to be no real conflict of interest with Olbermann's acts and his job on MSNBC. But as an employee of NBC, the parent corporation of MSNBC, his job and his acts are controlled by the various stipulations in his contract and the rules and regulations by which the network has set up as guidelines for its employees.

Olbermann himself said in a statement to Politico, "I did not privately or publicly encourage anyone else to donate to these campaigns, nor to any others in this election or any previous ones, nor have I previously donated to any political campaign at any level."

But there is no real conflict of interest between Olbermann's acts of contributing to Democratic candidates and appearing as the frontman on MSNBC's "Countdown," where he rails against the perceived failings, idiocies, and wrongs of the right. The conflict only appears when parent company NBC wants to present MSNBC as an unbiased news organization.

It is not. Olbermann, along with Rachel Maddow, and Ed Schultz (and others) exists as a counter to Fox News' Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Glenn Beck -- only with a lot less ratings success.

Giving NBC News and MSNBC president Phil Griffin the benefit of posturing, it then must be asked who might replace Olbermann in the time slot across of Bill O'Reilly on Fox, where O'Reilly has held sway for years? It seems that it might be a bit more difficult to do than it would seem.

MSNBC's first announced choice, The Nation editor Chris Hayes, was also found to have made political campaign contributions. Their second choice? Freelance afternoon anchor Thomas Roberts.

But will Roberts be able to pull in the viewers? Olbermann had steadily built an audience over the years. He did so with his totally biased and liberal opinions. Will the struggling network be able to persevere without its top ratings magnet? Or will the network allow Olbermann to return after a suitable period of time, let him air an apology, and continue as before?

Since MSNBC as a company exists to make a profit, and profits in television are gauged via ratings, how long before it takes before the executives see that suspending Keith Olbermann "indefinitely" is a conflict to their interests?
