Chicago's Best Summer Festivals

When the temperature and humidity is high, Chicagoans brave the elements at one of many summer festivals. Every street festival has some variety of music and street food, there are some festivals that stand out above the others.

10) Taste of Chicago - There is nary a person who lives in Chicago who doesn't go to the "Taste" just once in their lifetime. If you go on evenings, the weekend, or on the Third or Fourth of July it will be extremely crowded. Nevertheless, the festival features cuisine from over 70 local restaurants, free concerts with big name performers, and amusement rides for kids. Food is exchanged for tickets which you can buy at the booths at the site or at local grocery stores. To get the most bang for your buck is to try the sampler portion so you can save your tickets to try other foods. Grant Park (on Columbus Parkway), Chicago. Admission is free even if you don't purchase food tickets.

9) Chicago Air and Water Show - If you don't actually attend the show on North Avenue Beach, you can at least hear it throughout the lakefront of Chicago even as the planes practice during the week of August 15th and 16th. Over the years, the show has traditionally featured aviation's top military and civilian pilots in different aircraft. North Avenue Beach, Chicago. Admission is Free, but bring some Advil for your neck.

8) Bluesfest - For a city that prides itself in its blues music scene, Grant Park will be the place to be for the 26th Annual Chicago Bluesfest in Grant Park will be from June 12th through June 14th. There will be several jam sessions at various times throughout each day on any of the five stages in the park. While food is not the main attraction, some Chicagoans see this festival as a preview to the Taste of Chicago. Headliners this year include, Eddie C. Campbell, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Bettye LaVette, and Trudy Lynn. Grant Park, Chicago. Admission is free and public transportation is recommended.

7) Venetian Night - On June 25th, the 2020 edition will be the 52nd Annual Venetian Night. Crowds of over a half million people flock to the shores of Lake Michigan to see a parade of about 35 decorated boats as they sail from the Shedd Aquarium to Monroe Harbor. A spectacular fireworks display synchronized with music follows the show. This is truly a way for the city to show off the benefit of being located on the lake. Lakefront between the Shedd Aquarium and Monroe, Chicago. Admission is free but prepare for a lot of sitting.

6) Outdoor Film Festival in Grant Park- Every Tuesday from July 14th to August 25th features free outdoor movies of classic films of all genres. This year's selections include: Sunset Boulevard, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Psycho, and Tootsie. This is a fun ongoing event the city has planned which provides an opportunity for visitors to turn an ordinary picnic into a movie night. Grant Park, Chicago. Admission is free.

5) Taste of Lincoln - While it may appear that most neighborhoods in Chicago put on a copy-cat festival of bad street food, beer, and music, the Taste of Lincoln always seems to be a really good time because of the people that come out. Maybe it's the bands that energize Chicagoans out of their backyard barbeques to enjoy live music. This year's festival includes Sugar Ray, Tonic and local cover band Wedding Bann'd. There is also a free kids carnival with pony rides and a petting zoo. Lincoln Avenue (Between Fullerton and Wrightwood), Chicago. Admission fee is an optional $7-$10 donation. The best way to get there is by the red or brown line trains.

4) Wells Street Art Festival/Old Town Art Fair - Both art festivals are located around the North Avenue "Old Town" neighborhood simultaneously. What separates these festivals from others is the featured local and national artists which display sculptures, paintings, photography, and glasswork. Live music is also a mainstay of these fairs which will take place on June 13-14th. The Well Street Art Festival features a Beatles cover band, American English, while the Old Town Art Fair has more subdued orchestras and folk music. North and Wells, Chicago. Admission fee is an optional $7-$10 donation at each festival.

3) Ribfest - While many urbanites may not see the point to venture outside of the city limits, a short drive to the southwest suburb of Naperville will be well worth the gas money for a carnivore's dream. The Naperville Ribfest is not a street fair, it's a bona fide national rib competition rivaling Memphis In May where pit masters from all over the world see who can smoke and grill the best meat out there. From July 2nd to the 5th, the park will be graced with the presence of Heart, Blue Oyster Cult, and Huey Lewis and the News. Knoch Park, Naperville, Illinois. Admission is $8-$10 dollars per person (not including food and drink). Paid parking is available on site. Bring your own antacids.

2) Lollapalooza - Chicago's Grant Park turns into a 3-day music free for all on August 7th - 9th. While Lollapalooza once traveled to different cities, it has found a more permanent home in Chicago. Once known purely for alternative rock, Lollapalooza features hip hop, punk rock and even folk music on 5 different stages which may have performers on all at once. It also provides an opportunity for concertgoers to enjoy bands they haven't heard of yet. Grant Park, Chicago. Tickets are already on sale and now start at $190 dollars for the full 3 days. Public Transportation is highly encouraged.

1) Ravinia Festival - Can a festival outside the city limits really be the number one festival? Absolutely. Ravinia is the home to a summer-long music festival which has hosted acts such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Louis Armstrong, Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Stephen Sondheim, In recent years, Ravinia has shown more contemporary artists such as the BoDeans, Hootie and the Blowfish, and Carrie Underwood. Some people enjoy the show in the covered pavilion, while others make a night out of it and picnic while they enjoy the music on the lawn. Highland Park, Illinois. Lawn tickets start at $5 and pavilion tickets start at $10, but vary according to who is playing that night. You can get to Ravinia by Metra Trains, or parking with shuttles to and from the grounds.
