How to Know It's Time to Clean Your Fuel Injectors

Is your (older) car having difficulties starting up in the morning or does your car's engine randomly turn off at traffic lights? Cleaning the fuel injectors of your car may be just what you need in a questionable situation.

It is a great time in your life. You recently purchased an older, used car for a good price and feel very proud of yourself. The mechanic you took the car to for a checkup insisted you purchased a solid machine and that there would not be any foreseeable issues with how it will run. In fact, while in the presence of the mechanic, the operation of the car on the whole seemed to function so smoothly, it felt too good to be true. Then a couple of days go by and you are driving your new car like its rightful owner and all of a sudden the engine conks out on you, the wheel locks up and you are forced, feeling like an invalid, to pull the car over to the shoulder. You are completely baffled, although because it is the first of these occurrences, you figure it cannot be so bad, so you merely shake off the frustration and attempt to start the car up again. Unfortunately, the engine does not budge until after several attempts with the starter. Furthermore, when you try starting the car up each morning from the next day on, you receive the same treatment.

A Personal Experience

I had this sort of experience myself. Recently I purchased a 1995 VW Golf that was deemed to be in great shape, which it was, so long as you did not drive it. I would take it back to the original mechanic to see what was wrong and he was persistent in telling me that an all around check was complete and that there were no foreseeable issues. He had no idea what the problem could be. During the same time, I took the initiative by making several trips to NAPA, where I requested free diagnoses of the car. Each and every time, and with a different representative, I was informed that everything seemed to be running smoothly. I finally decided to take matters into my own hands, and so did a bit of research. I even signed up for roadside assistance during one of the times that the car shut off. The person who helped me the first time brought out a can of injector fluid, and upon spraying it into an unidentified tube near the engine, was able to switch the engine on immediately. He had nothing further to say, only to recommend I keep a can in the car at all times to use in the future. This of course did not hit the core of the problem.

A High Potential Resolution

I learned the following basic facts about my car: the battery was running smoothly, the oil was reading ok, and there was nothing wrong with the starter. Then I had an epiphany. I gathered that it is an old car and that I do not know anything about how the previous owner maintained it. If all was running well according to some mechanics and people from NAPA, then it must be another breed of a maintenance issue, one that requires a thorough cleaning of some very critical aspects of an automobile. Sure enough, I took the risk in deciding to pay a handsome fee to get my fuel injectors cleaned. This procedure, I learned quickly, is an extremely effective method for cleansing some of the most crucial mechanisms of the car. In fact, a car that has not received a cleansing for 8,000 miles will suffer from clogging and lack of fuel efficiency; you will actually be spending a lot more money on gas! I got the operation done and two days later, upon starting the car from the morning, a large plume of dark smoke exited from the exhaust. I cannot express in words the relief that came to my soul. A big hallelujah for a clog-free car!
