Three '90s Alt-Rockers Who Crossed Over to Nashville Twang
These alternative rockers have found success in the Nashville country music scene.
Country and pop music have a long history of crossover artists going from one genre to the other or straddling the line between the two. The '90s alternative rock explosion came to a halt as soon as your crazy uncle started liquidating his Campbell's soup stockpiles from the Y2K-panic, leaving many artists searching for a place in the post-2K soundscape. Some bands soldiered on with success thanks to their devoted fan bases; the Foo Fighters are a prime example. Others became go-to staples for VH1 interviews about the '90s; I won't call out any of these alternative rockers but you know who they are. Some artists broadened their musical horizons and found success in Nashville, of all places, as country stars.
Darius Rucker of Hootie amp; the Blowfish
Perhaps no band better embodies the spirit of alt-rock-gone-pop more than Hootie amp; the Blowfish. Darius Rucker, frontman of the eponymous '90s alternative pop group, released an R B; album in 2002 that floundered in the marketplace, but the lack of critical and financial success of that album drove him to the country music scene. Country music was a natural fit for Darius Rucker since Hootie amp; the Blowfish incorporated a hint of Southern rock into many of the South Carolina band's songs. The 2020 solo country release "Learn to Live" sent Darius Rucker to the top of the country music scene. The single "Don't Think I Don't Think About It" rocketed to #1 on the country charts, marking the first time that an African-American singer topped the country singles chart since Charley Pride did so in 1983. The country album spawned two more #1 singles, displaying the broad appeal of Darius Rucker's music sensibility.
Kevin Griffin and Travis McNabb of Better Than Ezra
Better Than Ezra delivered alternative-rock radio staples such as "Good," "King of New Orleans," "Desperately Wanting," and "At The Stars" during the '90s. While Kevin Griffin's frontman duties with the band Better Than Ezra continue and the band remains a staple on the alt-rock festival circuit and radio format, the frontman has expanded his music endeavors in a post-2K world. Better Than Ezra's Kevin Griffin earned songwriting credits for Howie Day's "Collide" and Missy Higgins' "Scar," further displaying his penchant for crafting strong melodies and beautiful lyrics. It was his co-writing work on country super groups Sugarland's song "Stuck Like Glue" that propelled him to the top of the Nashville world. The debut single from 2020's "Incredible Machine" album peaked at #2 on the US Country Songs chart. Coincidentally, the drummer for Sugarland is none other than Travis McNabb, Better Than Ezra's drummer from 1996 through 2020.
Aaron Lewis of Staind
Aaron Lewis' distinct vocals propelled Staind to the top of the rock charts from 1999 through 2002. The band was a staple on the summer concert festival circuit for a number of years, drawing in legions of fans to their Vans Warped Tour performances. While Staind initially became a household name for hard-hitting rockers like "Mudshovel," the "Breaking the Cycle" album marked a paradigm shift in the way the band was marketed to mainstream audiences. Hits like "It's Been Awhile" and "Outside" shifted the focus from all-out rock tunes to more intimate compositions noted for subtle acoustic guitar work and a growing emphasis on Aaron Lewis' vocals. In 2020, Aaron Lewis released his debut country EP as a solo artist, garnering the attention of critics for the track "Country Boy" which also featured the vocal talents of George Jones, Charlie Daniels, and Chris Young. Aaron Lewis' debut full-length country music album "The Road" was released in 2020 with "Endless Summer" charting on the country singles chart. While the album did not deliver the mass commercial success that Aaron Lewis' work with Staind did, the country solo album did receive a good deal of praise from country music critics.
