NFL Replacement Officials Highlight “Safety First” Hypocrisy

The lack of control the replacement officials have within the NFL is putting the players at risk. Unfortunately, the NFL only cares about player safety when it involves concussions and potential lawsuits.

The NFL replacement referees have lost control of the game and this directly puts the players in danger. When players aren't clear on what penalties will be called or not called, they tend to go beyond the scope of what they would normally attempt. Aside from simply officiating the game, NFL officials have always played an important role in keeping players under control and preventing altercations from building up and boiling over. Players and coaches around the league have started to become more vocal since things seem to be escalating, as the replacement officials do not garner the same level of respect from the players.

New York Giants LB Mathias Kiwanuka was quoted saying to the Daily News, "When you look around at some of the calls being missed, player safety is the big issue. If you're a guy who rushes the passer in certain situations, you want to know that the guys on offense aren't going to try to take a chop block on you because they know they're going to get away with it."

It is odd that a dispute over salary for the officials would take precedent over player safety. The NFL has been getting negative attention in regards to what we are coming to understand about the long-term consequences of concussions. The image that the league is trying to put forth is that it takes the safety of its players as its top priority. As a fan the message I am receiving is that what the NFL truly cares about is protecting itself from lawsuits, not protecting the players that go out there every game.

Kiwanuka also seems to touch upon this subject, as he was also quoted saying, "We're human at the end of the day, and if you let people get away with stuff, they're going to do it. Holding calls being missed here or there, that's not a big deal. But when you talk about defenseless players getting hit and that not getting called, after the emphasis they put on concussions, I don't think it's okay."

This all seems to boil down to money. The league is demonstrating that they prioritize money over player safety. Their actions clearly contradict the message that their public relations team is trying to put forth. The NFL is a juggernaut, and the fact that it cannot reach a settlement with the officials is insulting considering how much money the league generates. I can only hope that this matter gets settled soon before someone gets seriously injured.
