Catalytic Converter: How Does it Reduce Air Pollution?

A catalytic converter helps to convert harmful compounds which result from combustion activities into less harmful elements before they are released into the atmosphere through a car's exhaust.

So someone decided to do something about it. They made it mandatory for every automobile to have a catalytic converter installed to help curve air pollution. What exactly is this device? A catalytic converter helps to stop harmful elements from a car's exhaust from being propelled into the air. It does this by actually converting these harmful elements into less harmful elements from they are released into the atmosphere by way of a car's exhaust.

There are actually three elements that are converted into less harmful elements. The three are hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. Left in their present state these compounds or elements can present a serious health risk if they are allowed to be emitted into our atmosphere on a regular basis. First of all look at hydrocarbons which represent gasoline before it is consumed or burned in a car engine. Hydrocarbons help contribute to smog. Smog is nothing more than a mixture of fog, smoke, and chemical fumes which is definitely bad for the environment and it's not healthy for us to breathe. There have been some who claim that smog and air pollution is a contributor to stress and heart attacks not to mention the damage that is done to our lungs.

Next lets look at Carbon monoxide which is an odorless, colorless gas but it is very toxic. Now we have heard of countless families who fell victim to this gas because it got released into their home because of a faulty furnace. Carbon monoxide formulates when there is an incomplete oxidation of carbon during the combustion process. This gas can lead to fatigue and even chest pains and when the dosage increases your vision becomes impaired along with headaches, nausea, confusion, and dizziness. And of course at the most intense level of concentration someone can die. Through the combustion of gasoline carbon monoxide is created.

The next pollutant is nitrogen oxide which is created when the extreme heat from a car engine forces nitrogen to mix with oxygen resulting in smog and acid rain.

Enter the catalytic converter. This device does it job by converting carbon monoxide into another compound or element called carbon dioxide. Next it converts the hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water. The final phase of the converting process happens when nitrogen oxide is converted back into its original state of nitrogen and oxygen. When these compounds go through the converting process they are less harmful to the environment and less harmful to people because they don't pollute as much. They are now released into the environment through the exhaust in a car in their new form.

Catalytic converters are attached to the exhaust pipe and it is enclosed in a container similar to a muffler. These devices are also installed on other machines and equipment such as forklifts, trucks, buses, mining equipment as well as trains and generators.
