The Five Common Success Factors of High Performance Organizations

What makes a high performance organization (HPO) different from its competitors? Research of 290 studies and testing at 1,470 organizations worldwide identified 35 characteristics, grouped into five factors, that all HPOs appear to have in common.

If you Google the term "high performance organization," you get 157,000 results as of today. You get almost that many results from searching a literature database such as Business Source Complete too. And if you read all of those results, you will find a plethora of definitions for what makes a high performance organization and a corresponding multitude of ideas on how a company can become one. Needless to say, there is much diversity of thought on this topic, which can be quite confusing to any business leader who wants to improve their organizational excellence in economic, environmental and social sustainability.

Recently, though, a business researcher, named Andre de Waal, did the hard work to bring some much needed structure to this body of knowledge through scholarly, empirical study[1]. After an exhaustive review of 290 research studies and subsequent testing in 1,470 organizations worldwide, de Waal identified a quantifiable definition of a high performance organization (HPO) and a framework of 35 characteristics, grouped into five factors, which all HPOs seem to have in common. De Waal's definition of an HPO is: "an organization that achieves financial and non-financial results that are exceedingly better than those of its peer group over a period of time of five years or more, by focusing in a disciplined way on that what really matters to the organization."

The five germane success factors of all organizations that meet this HPO definition are:

The HPOs that were studied achieved 4 percent to 16 percent more revenue growth, 14 percent to 44 percent greater profitability, and 4 percent to 42 percent increase in total shareholder return over their non-HPO competitors. These HPOs also appear to rank higher in customer satisfaction and loyalty, employee satisfaction, innovation, and complaint handling. With numbers and indicators like that, de Waal's insightful HPO framework may be worth looking a little further into, so stay tuned for more articles from me as I delve into the specifics of what all this means.
