And the Oscar Didn't Go To...

For the past 81 years, the Academy Awards has handed out statuettes for the finest performances in movies. When it comes to acting, however, a lot of excellent performers have been overlooked.

Still... after 81 years, perhaps it's time to open a new category: Great Actors Who Never Won An Oscar (not counting honorary tributes). It's a surprisingly long list. Fans of these screen legends can find solace in the fact that the stars' work is still outstanding; and for the most part, their films are still available in some sort of format. Even though these folks might have picked up other awards for their performances, these great thespians never got to crack, "Yeah, I keep my Oscar in the bathroom."

When you watch the 81st Academy Awards show Feb. 22, don't cry if your favorite star doesn't get to thank his or her agent, co-workers, studio, producers, the other actors in the same category, family, mentors or God. Some of the industry's best-known names never got a chance to fumble in their pockets or purses for an acceptance speech.

So before the orchestra plays me off the stage, I present: Three Of Hollywood's Best Actors Without An Acting Oscar.

1. Ruby Catherine Stevens, I mean Barbara Stanwyck, remarked, "My only problem is finding a way to play my fortieth fallen female in a different way from my thirty-ninth." Her 80 movies in 38 years netted just four nominations. Film historians claim that "A Star Is Born," (the 1937 film starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March) is based on Stanwyck and ex-husband Frank Fay, a popular vaudeville comedian. Stanwyck left film for TV in 1961, where the Emmy Awards were kinder. In view of the four Academy Awards nominations, I guess I'll just say, "Sorry, Wrong Number."

2. The dashing Archibald Leach, most-often known as Cary Grant, never garnered an Oscar in his long career, which he abruptly ended in 1966. Despite pleas from several of Tinseltown's biggest directors, he never made another film. Just two Oscar nominations seem slim pickings for work in movies like "Notorious," "His Girl Friday," "North By Northwest," "Charade," "Suspicion" and "To Catch A Thief." As he once commented, "Everyone wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant." Grant did make it to stage at The Academy Awards in 1985 to present an Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement to James Stewart.

3. Agnes Moorehead, who received four nominations but never won said, "I guess I'll remain a bridesmaid for the rest of my life." Not a bad thing to be for the woman who co-starred with Orson Welles in "Citizen Kane," the film most-considered to be the best of all time. And even though she might best be remembered for playing Elizabeth Montgomery's wise-cracking mother on TV's "Bewitched" (a role she accepted only after Montgomery personally asked to accept it), she left a big mark on the big screen in films like "The Magnificent Ambersons," "Dark Passage," "All That Heaven Allows" and "Pollyanna." At least she could commiserate with Welles, who also failed to win a statue for his only acting nomination. Well, that's show biz.

As for other "old" Hollywood's non-winning actors, the group includes Fred Astaire, Deborah Kerr, Rosalind Russell, Glenn Ford, Errol Flynn, Edward G. Robinson, and hundreds of others who lit up the screen. So on Feb. 22, when someone announces, "And the Oscar goes to..." may the best man or woman win. Just remember, only time will tell.
