How to Clean a Fuel Injections System

Most systems need the attention of a professional, mistakes can be very costly.

There are two types of fuel injections systems, Throttle Body, and Multi-Port. With throttle body injection you have one injector port that sprays fuel down a throttle body similar to what was inside the carburetors of the past. Over time the throttle body can collect a dirty coating and reduce it's efficiency. The injector port may become partly plugged, and the result may be hesitation, or stalling. I say "May" because there are many other things as well that might be causing the problem.

The throttle body can be removed and cleaned with spray cleaner, and a brush similar in size and material to a tooth brush. It is recommended that this task be only attempted by persons that consider themselves at least semi-qualified mechanics. Without a background in this type of work it would be recommended you leave the job to the professionals.

Multi-Port injection also comes in two different configurations. One type has separate injectors that shoot fuel into the intake manifold for each cylinder. The other, style of injector is mounted so that it sprays fuel directly into the combustion chamber of each cylinder of the engine.

Both of these systems are definitely not a home mechanic repair situation. Some of these injectors can be rebuilt, some are a throw away item. Those that can be rebuilt must have a specialized repair shop do the work. They will replace defective parts and bench test the injector to assure it is firing properly and providing the proper fuel mist required for good combustion. They will also test that the injector isn't dribbling (leaking fuel between firing).

Diesel fuel injection pumps are very expensive, any attempt to disassemble, or clean them will cost you big bucks.

From the above information you can see that the wisest way to deal with a dirty fuel injection system is to prevent it from getting dirty in the first place.

Now go back to that shelf of injector cleaner at Wal-Mart, and pick up a bottle every 10,000 miles or so and pour it into your fuel tank.

A couple dollars preventing a dirty fuel injection system will save you hundreds of dollars in repairs if you allow dirt and grime to enter the fuel system.
