Cleaning Chrome

The easiest and cheapest ways to remove melted rubber or plastic from chrome exhaust pipes for motorcycles or cars.

For recent smears, such as sole rubber, use WD-40 on a clean rag and scrub while the pipes are hot. If the exhaust pipes are cool, then take the bike out again, and when you come back wipe them down. It is surprisingly easy, and most of us have WD-40 somewhere in our garage. I generally keep a rag and a can of the stuff with my bike, and clean any smudge as soon as I climb off the bike. It takes all of about 30 seconds and keeps the bike looking cherry.

For more difficult issues, such as melted plastic from plastic bags, rain gear, or the like, I use tin foil. That's right. Aluminum foil. You probably have some in your kitchen. This was scary, since the last thing any of us wants is to scratch our chrome. But here's the kicker. Aluminum is softer than chrome. No matter how hard I scrubbed (and I scrubbed hard - not psychotically hard, mind you, but with decent pressure) the chrome was unscathed. Aluminum foil not only works for rubber, plastic, etc, burned on pipes, but also clears up any errant oxidation, or rust, that may appear on other chrome, such as sissy bars, racks, and the like. I bought the chrome polish, and tried to find aluminum wool (similar to steel wool, but made of aluminum). This was a pain in the neck and ultimately, unsuccessful.

So there you are. Work with warm pipes and use WD-40 or aluminum foil. Save yourself time, money, and heartache. If you are skeptical (and I was), try these on an obscure part of the bike. Keep in mind, these might not work so well on plastic that looks like chrome. After all, aluminum foil is harder than plastic, and will probably scratch it. But for chrome...life just got easier. You can thank me later.
