There seems to be at least one person every year on American Idol that simply is fun to watch -- which in turn leads to the video of their performance becoming a hit. At the Atlanta auditions, which was aired Wednesday evening, this season's "fun" contestant stepped onto the stage, all smiles and sunglasses, at show's end. Introducing himself as General Larry Platt, he told the American Idol judges, including guest judge Mary J. Blige, that he was going to perform his own original song, "Pants On The Ground." When asked what the song was about, General Larry Platt said, "Pull your pants up." Before he was done, he had the judges panel laughing and clapping (except for notorious grouch, Simon Cowell, of course) along with his infectious "Pants On The Ground" rhymes. And, of course, the performance has since become a viral video...

General Larry Brown stomped and clapped and sang his circular "Pants On The Ground" song with enthusiasm and, as he went into his second verse, the judges -- sans Simon Cowell -- started getting into it as well. Mary J. Blige was laughing uproariously, clapping along, and clearly enjoying the performance. The judges laughed, they swayed, they sang along to the simple tune.

Simon finally interjected, getting the ebullient General Larry Platt to stop the party. "I have a horrible feeling that song could be a hit," he observed dryly. He picked up his background papers and asked the contestant his age. Platt said he was 62. Cowell, who seemed as if he was a mission up until that point to be rude to the General, seemed to do an about-face. Informing the General that he was a bit old for the competition (American Idol age parameters are 16-28), Cowell added, "But I don't think this is going to be the last we hear about you. I have a feeling about you, Larry."

And, of course, Simon was right. The "Pants On The Ground" video of the audition has gone viral. "Pants On The Ground" is the hook in thousands of titles recapping Tuesday evening's show.

Season 7's auditions produced its "fun" video in Renaldo Lapuz' "We're Brothers Forever." His performance, an ode to his admiration for Simon Cowell, became a viral video within hours. It was so popular, producers brought him back for the American Idol Season 7 finale, where the caped and befeathered Lapuz led the Nokia Theatre in singing his self-penned repetitive tune.

Suggestion for the American Idol producers: Create a one-off flashback show where the contestants that inspired viral videos are brought back for an episode. After all, they're part of what made American Idol the ratings winner that it has been for the past eight seasons (and counting...).

It would be a safe bet that General Larry Platt and his catchy "Pants On The Ground" makes it to the Season 9 finale as well.
