Carbon Nanotubes as Microscopic Catalytic Converters and Particulate Filters

Scientists from Finland have developed a method of transforming carbon nanotubes into filtration membranes that can also perform catalysis. The small size of the filters and the high catalytic activity mean this technology is very promising.

Carbon nanotubes are fascinating objects to me, as an organic chemist. They consist largely of carbon, which is the principal atom of study for an organic chemist. Carbon can form stable repeating bonds to other atoms of carbon, which is an unusual property amongst the elements on the Periodic Table. Carbon nanotubes take the form of a flat hexagonal "grid" of carbon atoms that's been rolled up and fused, forming extremely thin "hairs" of carbon that can be very simple to grow in the laboratory using techniques pioneered by Rice University researchers over the last 20 years. Essentially, carbon is vaporized with a heat source and the carbon vapor is then deposited onto a surface. Careful control of the temperature, pressure, and loading conditions leads to favorable yields of the nanotubes - a process that has been constantly finetuned for decades.

As an organic chemist who's interested in submicron filters - materials which can filter out particulates that are much, much smaller than a human hair, yet can still cause allergic reasons in humans - I was intrigued to read a recent article in the journal ACS Nano that describes some work by Finnish researchers. Nanoparticle pollution is a serious problem, and current filter technology simply isn't up to the task; the pollution particles slip right through standard filters and continue to cause health problems such as allergies, respiratory response, and even asthma. In an attempt to solve this problem, the Finnish researchers fabricated silicon dioxide disk "molds" that were laser drilled all over the surface with microscopic pinpricks. They then used chemical vapor deposition to deposit carbon on these starting "molds"; during the CVD process, these holes filled up with a web-like membrane of carbon nanotubes. The spaces between the tubes were such that particles less than a micrometer in size would become embedded in the filter. These materials therefore represent a way of cleaning persistent nanoparticle pollution from our breathing air, a technological goal that is very difficult to reach using existing technology.

Even more promising, the researchers were able to deposit palladium metal onto the nanotubes during the formation process. Palladium is an active metal used in many catalytic chemical processes. By passing propene gas through the palladium-substituted membranes in a hydrogen atmosphere, the researchers were able to show the production of propane, meaning that the palladium was acting as an active hydrogen catalyst. The results showed fantastic durability and activity, and could be reused for numerous cycles before having to be recycled.

Carbon nanotubes have long sought their "niche" in materials chemistry. While this application may not be the answer, this journal article certainly has something to say about the power of nanotubes chemistry and the possibilities left open to organic chemists such as myself.
