Five Best Tom Cruise Performances - from a Tom Cruise Hater

Five performances where Tom Cruise shows what might have been.

I used to like Tom Cruise. Back in the 80s when he was being a sidekick, either to great actors like Paul Newman in "The Color of Money" or man toys like in "Top Gun. " Then they started trying to make him into a leading man in "serious" films and he lost me. Throw in his dangerous involvement with Scientology and I just don't like the guy.

Love him or hate him (there does not seem to be any middle ground) he is a powerhouse in Hollywood and has been for some time. Overall, he is a mediocre actor with an excellent promotional machine.

However he has turned in some great performances along the way, and here are the five best:

Frank T. J. Mackey in "Magnolia". The perfect mix of smarmy and vulnerable as a self-help guru teaching over and underweight men how to seduce women. This is a master turn in a supporting role among a first-class ensemble cast.

Ron Kovic in "Born on the Fourth of July". The only leading role in a big movie on this list. Powerful performance playing a real person. Cruise amazingly takes the character from naive boy to hardened Marine to jaded and disaffected veteran.

Stefen Djordjevic in "All the Right Moves". This is a wonderful little film about small-town dreams, coming of age, and high school football. Cruise's character wants to escape the hard life of a Pennsylvania steel town but must redeem himself after making a youthful mistake.

David Shawn in "Taps". This cadet suffers from a serious Napoleon complex and Cruise plays him to a T. Overly macho and in love with his paramilitary persona, Shawn is the most committed, and most in need of being committed, at Bunker Hill Academy.

Vincent Lauria in "The Color of Money". Ultra-flake and incredible pool player, Vince is the billiards equivalent of Bobby Fischer: world-class talented with a total disregard and disrespect for the world and those around him. Cruise is a great foil to acting legend

Paul Newman, subtlety milking his older mentor of knowledge while all the time being himself, a self-absorbed jerk.

So, as you can see, Tom Cruise is a great second banana and supporting player but otherwise he is a "name". His movies sell tickets on his star value rather than his talent. He is famous for being famous, a "star" rather than a great actor. Give me Brad Pitt or Mark Wahlberg or Leonardo DiCaprio any day.
