Think like an Audio Engineer

There is no right way to record music. Start thinking outside of the box when recording, and you may be surprised with the results.

There are a lot of steps and knowledge that go into making a great sounding recording. People go to school and study audio engineering, and production, for years. You need to learn about microphones, audio flow, and frequencies, in order to create a great sounding recording. Not to mention all the little things, like how close to place a microphone to a guitar amp, and what the term "out of phase" even means. But, after looking past all of that, there is still a state of mind that is also required in order to make a great sounding recording. There is never one sure way to record an instrument, or mix a song; so thinking outside the box is a good thing to start doing.

Like I said above, there is no one way to record anything. Recording music can be a state of mind, so you need to try to transcend above "rules" every once in a while in order to experiment and create your own style. A great quality of every audio engineer and producer is that they all have their own style. Develop your own style in order to become more comfortable in the studio, and more confident in yourself. Developing your own style will also make yourself more marketable to clients. You will stand out to musicians if you have your own secrets and tricks in the studio, as opposed to someone that always goes by the book and who has no originality.

You must always remember that the way that a song sounds is not based how it was recorded, but obviously, how it sounds. The final product of a recording is the most important part, and it doesn't matter how you achieve it. Your recording techniques may not be the "normal" way that it is done, but it doesn't matter if it sounds great at the end. For example, some people may tell you that it is best to place the microphone that you have 3 inches away from your guitar amp to achieve the best recording. However, if you find that you like to place your microphone 6 inches away from the amp, and place another microphone behind the amp, then that is great if it sounds the way you want it to. Try sticking a microphone inside of a metal trashcan and taking note of what it does to the sounds of your recordings. You might be surprised.

I cannot stress how important it is to experiment in the studio when recording songs. If you are a musician as well, then you can use any spare time that you have experimenting with your own personal recordings in order to find some neat tricks to achieve great sound. Don't let anyone tell you that you are recording the wrong way. If it sounds great, then you can tell them that it was exactly the way you intended to record it, and that maybe they are recording the wrong way.
