Three Saxophones at the Same Time! The Music of Rahsaan Roland Kirk
Rahsaan Roland Kirk was an underappreciated jazz maverick known for his outragious performances, including playing three saxes at the same time.
About The Man
Rahsaan Roland Kirk died at age 41 on December 5, 1977, after a second stroke. Blind from birth, he was a one of kind performer, preferring to front his own groups, only rarely performing as a sideman. His specialty was free improvisation. According to contemporaries, his best performances happened when challenged by other musicians. When I saw him at the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival, he was truly challenged by the best of the best.
About his style
"Rahsaan could play any style - classical, straight ahead, or swing," said fellow jazz innovator Grover Washington Jr. But, many of his fellow musicians were intimidated by the man, because he frequently upstaged them in jam sessions and he didn't suffer fools.
While Kirk was best known for playing multiple saxophones at once, his distinct humming and circular breathing technique on flute most influenced other musicians, such as Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson. On Jethro Tull's first album, he covered Kirk's "Serenade to a Cuckoo."
At age 16, Kirk figured out how to play three-part harmonies on three instruments at the same time by experimenting with a standard tenor sax and two archaic Spanish saxophones, the stritch and the manzello. He played tenor with his left hand, fingered the manzello with his right hand, and blasted through the stritch.
After his 1975 stroke partially paralyzed one side of his body, Kirk modified his instruments to enable him to play two instruments at once with just one arm.
In 1977, a second stroke caused his death.
In 1998, a three disk Rahsaan Roland Kirk collection, "Dog Years in the Fourth Ring", was released. Even though the first two disks are made up of previously unreleased live recordings, critics praised this collection.
