How Americans Are Destroying the Environment by Cutting Down Trees for Toilet Paper

Okay, so you have to defecate in a public restroom and after you wipe your butt with cheap abrasive dry toilet paper you still don't feel quite clean. Sound familiar? Unfortunately, this is the scenario for most Americans, but why?

Many Americans who are looking to buy a toilet wouldn't know a bidet if it hit them in the head. Bidets still have not caught on in the U.S. Why are European and Asian posteriors as clean as if they had just come out of the shower and Americans are still going through their workday with dirty butts? The reason is we don't want to be like the French or the Japanese and we have to much pride to switch now. The truth is that we can't admit when we're wrong. Americans think the French and Japanese are just weird and so are their toilets. However, logic would suggest that going through your day with a smelly butt caked with old dried feces is not only weird, it's gross. Many of us Americans keep ourselves impeccably clean and smelling great. Why should we have to suffer with dirty bottoms when most countries that can afford indoor plumbing use bidets. Who enjoys smelling someone Else's' dirty butt? Skid marks in your underpants? It should be a thing of the past. It all begs the question: Why won't we change here in the U.S.?

Let's put our thinking caps on and reconsider this hygienic invention. First of all, there are different types of products sold that are commonly known as bidets. The word is French in origin and means pony, which refers to something you straddle or sit on. Many traditional bidets are separate from the toilet, usually next to it, and look like they are for washing your feet if you don't know what they are used for. The Japanese have toilets that wash, blow dry, play soothing music, warm your seat, and even monitor medical conditions through automatically testing your urine. Many bidets are similar to the Japanese style toilet and most have a heated water spray as opposed to just cold water. Some fires have been linked to electric bidets, but this is rare. Also, there are many cheaper models that do not use electricity at all. Many can be installed onto your existing toilet with little or no hassle. Some of these bidets are marketed and classified as medical equipment in the U.S. for individuals who cannot wipe themselves. The benefits go on, and on. Who would want to go back to hauling water from a river after having had running water in their house? No one!, unless of course they were Amish.

A Hong kong based Bidet manufacturer told me that the majority of their customers in the U.S. were Latin Americans and Muslims. If you see any Muslims or Argentinians feel confident about shaking their hands, those people have far superior hygiene to you or me. Finally, the true reason for our reluctance to buy into the bidet is simple immaturity as a culture. We laugh off such things, yet we are totally embarrassed by our digestive system and would like to pretend we don't even have bowl movements. We would have to laugh at the thought of warm water sprinkling our under bits after every bowl movement. However, once you get used to having warm water sprinkling your under bits after every bowl movement and then take that warm water away and go back to just dry toilet paper, you won't be laughing.

To top it all off, there may be a corporate agenda in America against the bidet. One of the selling points of the bidet is that it is more environmentally friendly. The use of water to clean your posterior reduces the use of toilet paper needed and with some models, almost eliminates the need for toilet paper altogether. Countless trees would be saved if Americans all used bidets. This brings me to a frightening fact. We are destroying the environment because we refuse to use the more ecological bidet. Furthermore, a recent toilet paper ad on TV from a huge toilet paper producing company had several women spokespersons implying that the toilet paper they were selling was so soft that you could get and feel completely clean by using it alone. What a scam! Toilet paper will never be as effective or pleasant in removing waste as water. Does anyone really think that the big toilet paper manufacturers are unaware of the bidet and its widespread use in the rest of the world? What would happen to their profits if Americans started using them? These companies are cutting down whole forests for us to wipe our butts with and they won't stop until we realize it is not only unnecessary, but less effective, less healthful, and less pleasant to use toilet paper alone than good old tap water. After all, most of us have hot and cold running water in our homes and businesses, so there is no excuse for not using the bidet. Install bidets in your home. When your friends ask about it, play up the environmental aspect and get the word out. It's no laughing matter.
