Natural Abrasives

Quartz
It is grey colored material, ranked 7 in Moh's scale and composed of silica. It is used as abrasive after applying on a quality sand paper. It is used in grinding flour, ores, pigments, non-metallic surfaces etc.
Corundum
It is ranked next to diamond in hardness. Its chemical composition is crystallized aluminum oxide (Al2O3). The different crystalline forms of corundum are called ruby, sapphire, emerald etc. Corundum is naturally available as an accessory material with mica. It can also be synthesized from bauxite. Corundum, without gem quality, is used as abrasive for grinding glasses, lenses, gems, metals and also in metal cutting operations.
Emery is ranked 8 in Moh's scale of hardness. It is a fine-grained, opaque, massive mineral, composed of 55-75 % crystalline alumina, 20-40 % magnetite (Fe3O4) and 12% of other minerals such as magnesia, mullite, titania, silica etc. The proportion of alumina in the emery determines its hardness and grinding power. Emery is used in making the tips and edges of cutting tools, drilling tools etc. Artificial emery is a graded composition of alumina and magnetite, used for buffing and polishing operations in engineering industry.
Garnets
They are generally trisilicates of alumina, magnesite, magnesia and ferrous oxide, with Moh's hardness in the range 6 to 7.5. The approximate formula of complex calcium-aluminum-iron silicate is Ca3Al2(SiO4)3 Ca3F2(SiO4)3 Fe3Al2(SiO4)3. Garnets are too sort to be used for grinding steel / iron but can be used for finishing hardwoods when glued to paper / cloth. They are also used for bearing pivots in watches, grinding glass and polishing metals.
Diamond
Diamond is the hardest natural abrasive known. It is a non-conductor with high density. It is chemically inert, not attacked by acids and other corrosive solvents. Due to its hardness, it can cut any other material surface. But only any other diamond can cut diamond. Diamonds are used in drill points, saw tooth for cutting stones, cutting needles, grinding wheels and in operations demanding high hardness.
Uses of Abrasives:
Manufacture of abrasive paper or cloth
The roll of paper or cloth is passed through a series of rollers on which glue is sprayed to get thin coating of glue on paper or cloth. Then, it is passed under a hopper from which abrasive powder or grit is allowed to fall and spread evenly on the glued paper or cloth. Then, it is dried in a warm drying chamber. Then, it is cut in abrasive paper in cloth. Finally, abrasive paper or cloth sheets are allowed to age fro few days so that glue sets firmly on the paper or cloth, which is used for preparing smooth wood, metals and plastic surfaces.
Manufacture of grinding wheels
Grinding wheels are manufactured by mixing thoroughly abrasive grains with binder. Then mixture is molded in the form of wheels, heated and cured, which is used for removing scales from surfaces of metals and sharpening of cutting tools.
